Before you go: Patio dog policies change with the seasons, and many Detroit patios close or shrink once it gets cold. Call ahead or check the restaurant’s site before you bring your pup.

Tips for eating out with your dog in Detroit
- Know the Michigan patio rule. Michigan’s food code keeps pet dogs out of restaurants unless the local health department has approved the patio. Where dogs are allowed, they have to stay leashed and on the ground, not on chairs or tables (MDARD). Service animals are always welcome.
- Plan for the weather. From late fall through early spring, your best bets are covered spots like Mootz’s heated patio and Batch’s covered biergarten. Even those depend on the day, so call first.
- Bring water. Not every patio puts out a dog bowl. A collapsible dog bowl clips to your bag and takes up almost no room.
- Use a secure harness. Busy sidewalks and patio crowds are easier with a snug, secure fit. Our city harness guide has picks that work well for tight spaces.
- Tire them out first. A calm dog makes for a better meal. Downtown, Grand Circus Dog Park is a short walk from Mootz and Niki’s, and our Capitol Park & Corktown guide covers spots near the Corktown patios.
