Millie Bush Bark Park with Dogs (Houston)

If your Houston pup lives for water, this is the one. Millie Bush Bark Park sits inside George Bush Park on the city’s far west side, with about nine fenced off-leash acres, a big-dog side and a small-dog side, and a swimming pond on each. Entry is free, and almost every dog leaves happily soaked.

Rules can change. Always check Harris County Precinct 4 notices and the posted signs before you go.

What to know

  • Where: 16101 Westheimer Pkwy, Houston, TX 77082, inside George Bush Park (Harris County Precinct 4).
  • Hours: Dawn to dusk. George Bush Park closes on Thanksgiving, Dec. 24–25 and Jan. 1.
  • Off-leash: Only inside the fenced dog areas. Everywhere else in the park, dogs stay on a leash 6 feet or shorter.
  • Two sides: Pick the small-dog side for little or shy pups so they can play without getting bowled over.
  • Who can come: Vaccinated, non-aggressive dogs only. Pick up after your pup and fill in any holes they dig.
  • After rain: The whole park sits in the Barker Reservoir, a flood-control area, so it can get very muddy or close after heavy rain.
  • Pin: ~29.7262, -95.6688.

Tips

  • Go on a weekday morning or evening. Weekend late mornings are the busiest.
  • In summer, go early and bring fresh drinking water. Pond water isn’t for drinking.
  • Use the dog-washing station before the drive home, and pack an old towel for the back seat.
  • First dog park visit? Hang out near the gate for a few minutes and let your pup settle in before heading to the pond.

What to pack: 6-ft leash, bags, water and a bowl, two towels, and a secure harness.

How to get there
