Fort Funston with Dogs (San Francisco)

Fort Funston is San Francisco’s big dog playground: windy bluffs, sand dunes and a wide Pacific beach at the city’s southwest corner, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Much of it is open to dogs off-leash under voice control, so on a good day you’ll see dozens of happy pups racing across the sand while hang gliders float overhead.

Rules can change. Always check National Park Service notices and posted signs before you go.

What to know

  • Where: Fort Funston, off Skyline Blvd (Highway 35) near Lake Merced, San Francisco, CA 94132.
  • Off-leash: Allowed under voice control in the marked areas. Your dog has to come back the first time you call, and you must carry a leash.
  • Leash zones: Parking lots, sidewalks and paved roads are on-leash unless signs say otherwise.
  • Off limits: The fenced 12-acre habitat area in the northwest corner, other fenced or signed areas, and the closed stretch of the Coastal Trail north of the Horse Trail.
  • Cliffs: The bluffs are about 200 feet high and keep eroding. NPS warns that if your dog gets stuck on a cliff, don’t go after it. Keep your pup away from the edges.
  • Hours: Day use. Fort Funston closes overnight, so don’t plan a very early or after-dark visit.
  • Pin: ~37.7191, -122.5033.

Tips

  • The beach trail (and the Sand Ladder) is steep, loose sand. The climb back up is a real workout for you and your pup.
  • Stick to the paved Sunset Trail near the lot if you want an easy, flat walk.
  • It’s often foggy, windy and cold, even in summer. Bring a layer for you and a towel for your dog.
  • The surf and undertow are dangerous. Keep dogs out of the big waves.
  • Shy dog? Weekday mornings are calmer than sunny weekend afternoons.

What to pack: 6-ft leash, bags, fresh water and a bowl, towel, and a secure harness.

How to get there

Drive south on the Great Highway past the zoo, or take Skyline Blvd (Highway 35) south from Sloat Blvd. Turn west into the Fort Funston lot just south of John Muir Drive. Parking is free, with restrooms near the lot.

FAQ

Is Fort Funston fenced?

No. It’s wide open and runs right up to cliffs and the ocean, so only let your dog off-leash if their recall is solid.

Can my dog go on the beach?

Yes, Fort Funston’s beach is part of the voice-control area. Just know that getting down and back up is steep.
