Magnuson Park Off-Leash Area with Dogs (Seattle)

Magnuson Park’s off-leash area is Seattle’s biggest fully fenced backyard for dogs: 8.6 acres in the city’s northeast corner, with a big flat play field, a winding gravel trail and something no other off-leash area in the city has, a swim beach on Lake Washington. If your pup loves to run and paddle, plan a morning here.

Rules can change. Always check Seattle Parks and Recreation notices and the posted signs before you go.

  • Pin: ~47.6837, -122.2495.

Tips

  • It’s the most popular off-leash area in Seattle, so weekday mornings are calmer than sunny weekend afternoons.
  • Most of the trail is compact gravel and wheelchair accessible, which makes it an easy loop for people too.
  • Bring a towel (or two) for a wet, sandy dog, and keep an eye on your pup in the water.
  • Leave bikes outside the fence, and supervise young kids closely.

What to pack: 6-ft leash, bags (you must visibly carry them), fresh water and a bowl, towels, and a secure harness.

How to get there

Take Sand Point Way NE to Magnuson Park in northeast Seattle, near the Sand Point and Windermere neighborhoods. Enter the park and follow the signs toward the off-leash area and the parking near the lakeshore. The small/shy dog area is reached from NE 74th St.
