Asylum Lake Preserve is a quiet 274-acre pocket of woods and water on Kalamazoo’s west side, owned by Western Michigan University and kept as a passive-use natural area. Trails loop around the lake and through meadows — perfect for a leashed sniff-walk when you want nature without driving out of town. Dogs are welcome, but the leash rule is real (even if your pup wants a swim).
Rules can change. Always check the Western Michigan University Asylum Lake page and the posted preserve signs before you go.

Tips
- This is a preserve first, playground second. Keep voices soft, yield to hikers and leave wildflowers where they are.
- Trails can be narrow and rooty. A 6-ft leash (not a retractable) is easier when you meet other walkers.
- After rain the paths get muddy — boot-friendly shoes and a towel for paws help.
- Pair it with Fairmount Dog Park on another day if your pup needs a true off-leash run; Asylum Lake is leash-only.
- Parking is near Drake and Parkview. Don’t block neighborhood driveways.
What to pack: 6-ft leash, bags, water and a bowl, and a secure harness.
How to get there
Head to the west side of Kalamazoo where Drake Road meets Parkview Avenue (near WMU’s engineering campus area). Look for Asylum Lake Preserve access and trailheads at that corner.
